Week 2 Players to Watch in the Concho Valley

SAN ANGELO, TX-- Across the Concho Valley, players had incredible individual performances in week 1.

Mason’s Klay Klaerner posted almost 200 yards of total offense with a pair of touchdowns in their 27-21 win over Wall. The Hawk’s Coleman Coon racked up 151 receiving yards to help Wall make a comeback in that game.

Central’s Jackson Timme almost tied a school record with his 12 catches for 180 yards in their 19-7 win over Killeen Shoemaker. Texas Tech commit Maverick McIvor also threw for 324 yards in that game.

Miles running back Mason Bryan undoubtedly had the best statistical performance in the Bulldog’s drubbing of Ranger. The senior posted 312 yards and six touchdowns on 13 carries for the Bulldogs in that 67-14 win.

With week 2 upon us, who should you look for to step up for their team?

Kevan Covarrubiaz, Jr., ATH, Eldorado Eagles

Covarrubiaz showed well in his return to the field after missing last season with an injury.

The 5-foot-11 junior accounted for 336 yards of Eldorado’s 462 in their dominant win over TLCA. Covarrubiaz was also responsible for six of the Eagle’s seven touchdowns.

This week, he and the Eagles will face a tough challenge against Winters.

If he can post numbers like last week, Eldorado will match their win total from a year ago.

Edgar Nunez, Jr., QB, Ballinger Bearcats

The Bearcats kept the ball on the ground a lot in their overtime win over Brady in week 1.

They ran the ball 37 times compared to just 12 pass attempts.

However, Nunez showed he can spin the ball, completing 9 out of his 10 pass attempts for 104 yards with one interception.

While Ballinger would like to continue to run the ball, they may have to open up the pass game against a physical Reagan County team.

He’s also got good receivers like Cody Harral and Weston Rollwitz to target if they do pass.

Tristan Ortiz, Sr., OL/DL, Reagan County Owls

Why might Ballinger have to pass the ball more? Because Tristan Ortiz is relentless.

The 270-pounder is notorious for making big stops on defense and pancake blocks on offense.

He also set a new state powerlifting record in squat last year.

The Ballinger offensive line will have their hands full blocking Ortiz this week.

Kendall Blue, Sr., QB, Lake View Chiefs

Lake View proved they can sling the ball around the yard in their 47-42 loss to Lamesa last week.

Pulling the trigger for the Chiefs was Blue.

His first game as the Chief’s starter went extremely well, despite the loss.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns against Lamesa. He also put up 29 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground.

If the Chiefs can break their 18-game losing streak against Fabens Friday night, you will likely be able to attribute some of it to Blue’s play.

Brock Aschenbeck, Jr., WR/LB, Sonora

Aschenbeck stepped up to lead Sonora’s offense in a hard-fought win over Ozona in week 1.

The junior hauled in nine catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns to power the Broncos to a 34-19 win.

Aschenbeck was also second on the team in tackles with 12. He also had a sack and a tackle for a loss in that win.

It wasn’t a pretty win and the Broncos are looking to clean up their game against Lamesa on Friday. To do that, Aschenbeck, as well as their stacked receiving corps, will have to step up once again.
