Driver Airlifted After Crashing into the Back of a Sand Hauler on US 87

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The driver of a white Volkswagen four door sedan was seriously injured while crashing into the back of a sand hauling 18-wheeler near U.S. 87 North and Sharp Rd. between Grape Creek and Carlsbad.

According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Jaron Yarbrough, both the truck and the passenger car were traveling north on U.S. 87 when the 18-wheeler attempted to turn left off of the highway.

The driver of the Volkswagen failed to control his speed and ran into the back of the sand hauler.  Trooper Yarbrough says the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Law enforcement officers on the scene called for Airmed1 and the driver was airlifted to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Yarborough says the truck driver appeared to be uninjured but was going to be checked out anyway.

Yarbrough says the driver of the car may be cited for failure to control speed.
