DPS Identifies Victims of Fiery Crash on U.S. 277 South of Abilene

ABILENE, TX — The Texas Department of Public Safety released the preliminary results of the crash investigation for the two-vehicle crash 10 miles south of Abilene. KTXS was at the crash scene Monday.

According to the Texas DPS, Robert Earl Eckert, 57, of Tuscola, was driving his 2013 Nissan Altima southbound on U.S. 277 but was in the northbound lanes. Meanwhile, headed north driving his 2012 Ford F-150 pickup was Richard Wayne Meyer, 58, of Hawley. Riding shotgun with Meyer was Roy Earl Underwood, 59, of Tuscola.

The two vehicles collided head-on.

The Ford F-150 overturned on its side, and the Nissan Altima went up in flames. The fire likely killed the Altima’s driver, Robert Eckart, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two occupants of the F-150 were rushed to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, both with what DPS described as incapacitating injuries. The two guys in the truck were wearing seatbelts, DPS reported.

U.S. 277 is a winding and hilly roadway south of Abilene. Where the crash happened, there are double yellow stripes, indicating a no-passing area of the two-lane highway. This could indicate that the forward visibility for both drivers was limited, creating a circumstance where, if both vehicles were traveling in the same lane towards each other, little time was available to avoid a crash.

DPS reported the weather was clear, cloudy and the roadway dry. The crash happened at 2:20 p.m. Monday.
