What to Watch For in Week 3 of High School Football

SAN ANGELO,TX-- Week two saw the Central Bobcats and the 4th ranked Wall Hawks move to 2-0 records, Lake View start to figure out their new offense in a loss to Fort Stockton, and TLCA notch their first win since 2015. This week, another slate of unpredictable Texas high school football games is at hand.

After week two, fans are starting to see either harrowing or promising signs toward their team's fate come November. 

Here's what you need to watch out for in week three:

TLCA Eagles vs Grape Creek Eagles; the Eagles will win:

TLCA (1-1) had a well rounded performance in week two, with their defense only surrendering six points to Bronte and their offense putting up 44 points. Grape Creek (0-2), on the other hand, seems to be in a rebuilding year after a promising 2016 season. Grape Creek has dropped their first two games against Alpine and Ballinger by a combined score of 109-6. Grape Creek's troubles seemed to hit a new low when senior quarterback Jesse Jio and senior running back Austin Ortegon suffered injuries in last week's loss. Grape Creek needs the rest of their team to step up or they'll will start the season 0-3 for the first time since their winless 2013 campaign.

Can Miles steal a victory at Wolfenbarger Field:

The Miles Bulldogs (1-1) travel to Mertzon to take on an aching Irion County (1-1) squad coming off a 58-8 loss to Reagan County. Miles' senior running back Jonas Garcia had a good game in the Bulldogs' loss to Rocksprings last week and is starting to gain momentum in the young season. Irion County's junior quarterback Nathan Chacon has looked good this season, as well, with the Hornets moving to an aerial attack. Chacon has a big time arm for a small school, it'll be interesting to see how he handles another good defense like Miles. Irion County is also turning Wolfenbarger Field into a fortress after upsetting Christoval in their season opener. However, Miles' depth is what should see them through in this game.

Defensive battle brewing in Wall:

In their 21-3 victory over Cisco, the Wall Hawks (2-0) showed why defense wins championships. Granted, they were helped a little by some miscues from Cisco. But their defense made big stops and forced offensive errors on a night where the Hawks offense struggled to get any semblence of the traction they had the week prior. Seniors Casey Braden and Brock Rosenquist had solid offensive performances despite the overall production being low, making big plays when it counted most. This week, the Hawks take on Lago Vista (2-0) at home. Lago Vista has shown a rather dominant defense through the first two weeks, allowing just 26 points in their two games in 2017. However, Lago Vista has yet to see a team as well rounded as Wall's 2017 team. Last year, the Hawks dismantled Lago Vista 62-14 on the road and this is a better Wall squad than 2016 by a country mile. Wall should move to 3-0 this week.
