SAN ANGELO, TX — A 17-year-old boy was critically injured after he was struck by a rolling Mercury Mountaineer in a major motor crash on N. Koenigheim near 1st St. Wednesday afternoon.
According to the head of the San Angelo Police Department's Traffic Division Cade Solsbery, the young man was standing in the vicinity of the intersection of 1st and Koenigheim when a man driving a Chevrolet Malibu, headed east to west, attempted to cross the major north-south thoroughfare in San Angelo.

Solsbery said his initial investigation revealed that the Malibu driver "did not yield the right-of-way to the oncoming [northbound] traffic." A Mercury Mountaineer driver attempted an evasive maneuver, but struck the Malibu anyway, sending it into a roll where it hit the by-standing pedestrian.
When Solsbery arrived, he said paramedics from the San Angelo Fire Department’s Station #1 were already performing CPR on the pedestrian. The teenager's current status is unknown. EMTs stabilized the victim as much as they could before transporting him to Shannon Medical Center. Solsbery characterized the pedestrian’s state as having “incapacitating injuries.”
Solsbery added it is too early in the investigation to issue citations. Police traffic investigators have video footage that displays most of the crash, Solsbery continued.
The crash happened at approximately 5 p.m. The pedestrian was on the side of the road near Discount Tire. Over the radio, when paramedics found him, they stated he was laying face down in the pebble beds around the store.
UPDATE: May 18, 2017 4:45 p.m.
Investigators with the San Angelo Police Department’s Traffic Section are continuing their investigation into a two-vehicle rollover crash that injured a nearby pedestrian Wednesday evening.
Police and Fire Department personnel were initially dispatched to the intersection of 1st and Koenigheim around 5 p.m. When Police arrived, they discovered Medics performing CPR on a male pedestrian that was struck by one of the vehicles involved in the crash.
The pedestrian, a 20-year-old San Angelo man, was transported to Shannon Medical Center with incapacitating injuries. At the time of this release, he was listed in critical condition.
A preliminary crash investigation revealed the pedestrian was standing in the vicinity of the intersection when a Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling east to west attempted to cross Koenigheim. The Malibu’s driver, a 62-year-old San Angelo man, failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and subsequently collided with a Mercury Mountaineer that was traveling northbound on Koenigheim. The force of the collision caused the Mountaineer to roll and hit the pedestrian.
The driver of the Malibu received non-incapacitating injuries and refused transport. The driver of the Mountaineer, a 31-year-old San Angelo woman, and her infant child passenger were transported to San Angelo Community Medical Center for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further information is available for release at this time.
The family of the 20-year-old will be hosting a prayer vigil for family, friends, and the community tonight. For those interested to attend, one will be at Lake View High School's flag pole, and the second will take place at Shannon Medical Center. Both prayer vigils will begin at 7 p.m. tonight.
Editor’s Note: The age of the pedestrian was thought to be 17 years of age at the time of the initial report . However, after further investigation, police have identified the pedestrian to be 20 years of age.
