SAPD Identifies Walmart Candy Thief, Gives Kudos to Military Officer for Assistance

SAN ANGELO, TX - This morning, we reported on a theft that took place at Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 1852 W. Sherwood Way involving a belligerent candy thief (see here). This evening, SAPD identified the suspect, and recognized the military officer who assisted in the thief's apprehension.

San Angelo Police Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez restated that just after 9 a.m. this morning, officers were dispatched to the Walmart for the report of a shoplifter leaving the store.

"While en route to the call, officers received additional information about the suspect’s description and that he kicked the front glass door," said Gonzalez.

She added that upon arrival, Officer C. Schneider observed several citizens pointing at the suspect, who was attempting to walk away.  Officer Schneider approached the man and directed him to stop several times, but the man refused to comply, raised his fists and threatened to harm the officer.

"After threatening the officer, the suspect ran back towards the store where he was taken into custody with assistance from an Air Force Military Police Officer who was nearby," Gonzalez said.

The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Gilberto Lee Barrientos of San Angelo. Employees said Barrientos stole five boxes of miscellaneous candy from the store prior to police arrival.

Gonzalez said, "Some of the candy was located in Barrientos’s pocket at the time of arrest, and other candy was located near a sidewalk."

Barrientos was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and booked for Class C Misdemeanor Theft, Evading Arrest Detention, and Criminal Mischief for damaging the store’s door.
