Former Lamesa Fire Chief Killed in Collision

LAMESA, TX - Monday morning, on Highway 180, about four miles west of Lamesa, 54-year-old Kendall F. Amos, a former Lamesa Fire Chief, died after colliding with a truck towing a semi trailer. Amos was driving a motorcycle.

According to Texas DPS, Amos was traveling east on Hwy 180 when he drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with the tractor trailer, which was heading west.

DPS said the roads were wet, and Amos did not have a helmet on.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the truck driver suffered no injuries.

According to a local media source in the area, funeral services for Amos will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Forrest Park Community Center building with Kody Lynn Amos officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Gonzales Funeral Home.

Amos' obituary in the Lamesa Press-Reporter said, "Kendall was a Master Certified Firefighter the time when he was employed by the City of Lamesa. He was an EMT, had served as a reserve officer with Lamesa Police Department, insurance, informative technology tech, carpet layer, had been 'Blitz' the fire safety clown, Operating Room Director and Registered Nurse at Medical Arts Hospital."

The current Lamesa Fire Chief, Larry Duyck, sayid Amos the entire Lamesa Fire Department will miss Amos.

"His dad was a fireman also; matter of fact, he is still shown as one of our fire marshals. And so it's a family thing, especially with all of the firefighters here, and especially in a small town. He'll be missed, and when something like this happens, everyone gathers around and you help each other get through that," Fire Chief Duyck said.

Duyk added, "He would always like to make people laugh, and liked to do little pranks and surprise people with different things; he just enjoyed life to the fullest. He'll be missed. He was a good guy."
