US 67 heading towards Mertzon will remain closed until about 7 p.m. this evening due to an 18-wheeler rollover crash. This crash marks the third since construction on the highway began.
DPS Trooper Scott Keane said a paint striper and convoy were heading eastbound to a construction zone. Traffic stopped because US 67 tapers off into one lane between the West Texas Boys Ranch and Twin Buttes. Keane said the unit striper in the rear failed to control speed. The driver didn't see the vehicle in front hit his brakes, so the striper truck hit a ROC Services Trailer, swerved, hit one of the other trucks full of concrete and flipped onto its side.
The convoy is part of a San Antonio company working on highway striping across the state.
Trooper Keane said the driver of the 18-wheeler will receive a citation for failure to control speed.
As stated, this is the third crash in the area since construction began. Previously, another 18-wheeler's back axle came off and tangled with a West Central Wireless SUV; and on Friday, San Angelo LIVE! covered another crash that occurred in the area involving a driver under the influence. See more here.
Currently, traffic is backed up 2 miles toward San Angelo. After 7 p.m., the road will be down to one lane until sundown due to construction. Please avoid the area, or proceed with caution.
