Texas DPS released the names of the two killed after their 2006 Honda Shadow motorcycle was rear-ended by a 2014 Ram 1500 pickup truck Tuesday afternoon. The investigators indicated neither occupant of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet.
Killed were San Angelo resident Jon Levie Phillips, 36; and his passenger Daniealle Renee Bailey, 31, of Odessa. Coke County Judge Roy Blair pronounced both riders of the motorcycle dead at the scene.
According to the DPS, the Ram 1500 was traveling southbound on U.S. 87, 4.4 miles north of Water Valley, in the outside lane and struck from behind the motorcycle traveling the same direction in the same lane.
The driver and passenger in the Ram pickup were uninjured. Driving was Cesar V. Garcia, 39; and Edgar Carrasco, 29. Both men were from Odessa.
The crash happened at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. DPS reported the weather was clear and the roadway dry at the time of the crash.
The approximate location of the crash:
DPS Trooper and spokesman Justin Baker said the motorcyclist with passenger had just pulled out into a southbound lane from the rest area and was traveling at a slow speed. Baker said the pickup driver told troopers he saw the motorcycle in the inside lane. For an unknown reason, the motorcycle driver maneuvered the bike into the outside lane in front of the pickup just prior to the crash. The speed limit on this stretch of highway is 75 mph.
DPS released their preliminary crash report Tuesday evening and did not indicate if there were citations pending. The crash remains under investigation, Baker reported Tuesday evening.
