SAN ANGELO, TX — The Wall and Sterling City volleyball teams each won their playoff matches Thursday to advance to the regional finals.
No. 7-ranked Wall swept No. 8 Idalou 25-13, 25-18, 25-14 in another impressive performance. The Lady Hawks still haven’t dropped a set in three playoff matches.
It was also the 200th win of head coach Kimberly Branch’s career.
Wall (34-7) will now play the winner of No. 1 Holliday and unranked Odessa Compass Academy in the Class 3A Division II regional finals next week.
Sterling City held off Archer City in a five-set thriller in its regional semifinal Thursday.
The Lady Eagles won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17 before Archer City rallied with a pair of 25-20 wins in the next two sets. Sterling City hung on for a 15-13 win in the final set.
Sterling City (23-15) is unranked, but the Lady Eagles have earned a spot among the last eight teams in the state in Class 2A Division II. They’ll face No. 6 Windthorst in the regional final next week at a site and time to be determined.
Windthorst ended No. 10 Miles’ season Thursday with a four-set win. The Lady Bulldogs won the first set 25-23, but they weren’t able to keep up that level of play and dropped the next three sets 25-9, 25-19 and 25-18.
We have two other area teams still alive in the playoffs in Class 1A. Veribest (28-9) will play Benjamin in the regional semifinals Saturday, while Water Valley (23-13) will face Knox City the same day.
