SAN ANGELO, TX — The Amarillo High School football team will have to forfeit six wins for using an ineligible player, Amarillo ISD announced Friday.
One of those wins came against San Angelo Central back in Week 2 when the Sandies beat the Bobcats 41-21.
That forfeit will now push the Bobcats' record to 7-3, while Amarillo High falls to 1-8.
The Sandies were previously 7-2 overall and 4-1 in District 2-5A Division I. They now face a must-win game tonight against Amarillo Tascosa (6-3, 4-1) to try and sneak into the playoffs with the district's fourth and final playoff spot.
If Amarillo High loses to Tascosa, the beneficiary will be Amarillo Caprock, which has moved from fifth place to fourth.
The ineligible player played in eight games this season. The other five wins that have been forfeited were against:
- Odessa High
- Midland High
- Lubbock Monterey
- Lubbock Coronado
- Lubbock High
A statement from Amarillo ISD reads:
The UIL has denied our wavier, which means that the Amarillo High varsity football team has been playing with an ineligible player most of the season.
Unfortunately, the final steps in filing the appropriate UIL administrative documentation were not completed on behalf of the student-athlete before the start of the season. While this comes down to an unintentional, but ultimately consequential clerical oversight, we genuinely regret its impact on our student-athletes.
We take UIL rules and regulations seriously. Going forward, we will work diligently to fortify our record procedure to ensure a mistake like this doesn’t happen again.
