EL PASO, TX - Texas State Wildlife Officials are urging drivers to be more vigilant on the roads to help protect endangered wildlife such as Black Bears. This comes after a road incident over the weekend that turned deadly.
Ten Black Bears have been killed on West Texas roads alone since 2019, according to the Trans-Pecos Wildlife District. The most recent victim was a 302 lb adult male bear. Six more deaths occurred in other regions of Texas over the same time period.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife District is telling travelers to scan the sides of the roads more when entering bear country. Hitting a bear is a dangerous situation, and could turn deadly for both the driver and bear.
The TPWD asks that "If you do hit a bear, don't try to help it."
"An injured bear is still a very powerful animal," information stated. "Please report the incident to your local TPWD Biologist or Game Warden and call 911 for any personal injuries."
The body of the latest incident has been taken by biologists for "research and educational purposes".
The TPWD would also like to remind the public that "Black Bears are a state-listed species in Texas. It is unlawful for any person to possess, take, or transport endangered wildlife."
