DALLAS, TX -- The suspect allegedly involved in the kidnapping and subsequent death of Cash Gernon has now been charged with murder.
Back in May, the body of the slain four-year-old was found in the middle of the street in a residential area. After identifying the child and gathering evidence the Dallas Police Department arrested Darriynn Brown, 18.
Home surveillance footage showed Brown removing Cash from his crib in the middle of the night.
Brown was initially charged with kidnapping and burglary. A few days after the incident, he was charged with injury to a child with intentional bodily injury. He now faces a capital murder charge.
Preliminary police reports indicate Cash had multiple wounds from an edged weapon. The official autopsy report has not been released to the public at this time.
A few days ago Brown's attorney, Heath Harris, claimed his client suffers from schizophrenia. Brown has pleaded not guilty to the first charges.
"Based on what I believe, I am going to be able to support this kid is schizophrenic," said Harris. "We want to see if this was a situation where it’s a ‘who done it?’ Or a simple question of, ‘why wasn’t this prevented?’"
Harris told local media he does not believe Brown is the individual that appears in the surveillance video.
"They may have a witness that is testifying that it’s Brown, but I want an opportunity to challenge that witness. Even if you believe that is Brown in the video taking cash out of the crib, ok then what happened? What happened? You have three seconds," said Harris.
