Police: Video Shows Suspect Removing Slain Toddler From Bed

DALLAS, TX – The identity of the 4-year-old boy found stabbed to death in a Dallas neighborhood has been released. Police have also confirmed video surveillance shows the child being taken from his bed early Saturday morning.

According to the Dallas Police Department, Cash Gernon and his twin brother were staying with their father's girlfriend, Monica Sherrod.

Sherrod told police the children's father had been absent for some time. Police located the boys' biological mother who stated she believed her children were with their father. The father's whereabouts are currently unknown.

Cash's body was found around 7:00 a.m., but Sherrod didn't contact the police until nearly 11:00 a.m. to report the child as missing. This was nearly four hours after a jogger saw Cash's body lying in a pool of blood. He was approximately eight blocks from Sherrod's home.

Investigators reviewed the home surveillance footage with Sherrod and identified 18-year-old Darriynn Ronnell Brown as the suspect who can be seen removing Cash from his crib.

A search of a home resulted in officers locating a piece of tissue paper with drops of blood on it and a small pocket knife.

At this time it is unknown what the connection is between Brown and the child.

Kamron Mori, 18, is related to Cash and lived in the same home told local media he knew the suspect from high school and that they had been friends.

”Friends ain’t nothing,” said Mori. “Evil. No reason. Literally, no reason.”

Brown was subsequently arrested at his home. According to his mother, Mimi Brown, her son was home all weekend.

”That’s not right at all. I know my son is traumatized. I know he’s scared because I’m scared," said Mrs. Brown. "Darriynn is very kind. I feel that he’s being framed.”

She told police her son is a patient of Metrocare Services, an organization that provides mental health care to children and adults. 

Brown was formally charged with kidnapping and burglary, but authorities anticipate additional charges may be added. His bond was set at $1.5 million.
