HOUSTON, TX – During her first courtroom appearance on Monday, Theresa Balboa saw her bond amount increased to $600,000. Balboa was arrested after she was found inside a hotel room with her stepson's lifeless body.
According to court documents, Balboa is facing two charges at this time: Tampering with Evidence, in Particular a Human Corpse, and Assault with Intent to Impede Breath.
The first charge, Tampering with Evidence, in Particular a Human Corpse, is a result of police finding Samuel Olson's body. Balboa could face additional charges after Samuel's autopsy is completed.
According to investigators, Samuel may have died as early as May 10th. Samuel was officially reported missing on May 27th and found on May 31st.
The roommate told investigators he went to the apartment he shared with Balboa and saw Samuel's lifeless body on a bed covered in bruises. He admitted to helping Balboa move the child into the bathtub and eventually to a storage unit.
A different individual told police he drove Balboa and Samuel's body to the hotel room in Jasper. He later called Crime Stoppers and provided the tip that led to her arrest.
Neither of the two men have been charged in connection to the case and they have not been identified at this time.
At the time of her arrest, police believe Balboa was on her way to Louisana.
The second charge, Assault with Intent to Impede Breath, is related to a previous charge Balboa faced.
Back in November 2020, Balboa was accused of assaulting her boyfriend, Dalton Olson. At the time Balboa was released after posting her bond. During Monday's hearing, the judge added a $100,000 bond to the charge.
Olson is Samuel's father and after the assault the couple became estranged. After some time the couple reconciled and made plans to marry.
When Samuel was first reported missing, Balboa and Olson were interviewed by local news stations. A couple of days later Olson reported his fiance as missing, telling police she was last seen sharing posters seeking information to locate Samuel.
