SAN MARCOS, TX — The City San Marcus announced Sunday afternoon that three bodies have been recovered from the scene of Friday morning’s fire at the Iconic Village apartments located north of Texas State University there.
The City will not name the victims’ names until the Travis County Medical Examiner officially releases them. It is the medical examiner’s role to identify victims. The City said the bodies were recovered this morning but did not offer an exact time.
The City said that search and recovery efforts are continuing Sunday. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms National Response Team is leading the fire investigation in conjunction with the State of Texas Fire Marshal’s Office and the City fire marshal. It is not uncommon for federal agencies to lead investigations of events of this magnitude.
The City will update the public on the progress of the ongoing investigation Monday at an unspecified time.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those affected by this tragedy. We ask that the community continues to show the love and support that they have demonstrated so far, and respect the privacy of the family members,” the City of San Marcos stated.
The City of San Marcus public affairs office has become the central point-of-contact for media inquiries concerning the fire tragedy.
Two college students from San Angelo were victims of the fire. Haley Frizzell is presumed dead according to her family. Zachary Sutterfield of San Angelo is in critical condition at a military hospital in San Antonio.
On July 20, the City of San Marcos named five missing in the aftermath of the fire. They are James Miranda, Haley Frizzell, Belinda Moats, David Ortiz, and Dru Estes. Two were injured, but Sutterfield is he only victim reported in critical condition.
