Volleyball Roundup: Wall, Sterling City, Water Valley Earn State-Ranked Wins

SAN ANGELO, TX — We had a trio of state-ranked matchups Tuesday in the Concho Valley, including an upset of the No. 5-ranked team in Class 1A.

Sterling City (ranked No. 10 in 1A) went on the road and earned a four-set win over Veribest to improve its record to 26-3.

It’s the Lady Eagles’ second win this year over Veribest.

Sterling City has already matched last year’s win total when the Lady Eagles went 26-13 and reached the 2A Division II regional final.

They’ll play again Saturday when they host Grape Creek. Veribest (18-8) will try to bounce back when it visits Albany on Saturday.

Water Valley Rallies Past Christoval

The Water Valley Lady Cats backed up their ranking as the No. 8 team in 1A with a five-set win over Christoval, which is ranked No. 18 in 2A.

Water Valley dropped the second and third sets before rallying to win the final two sets for a 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-13 win.

Water Valley improved to 16-8-1 and will visit Sonora on Saturday.

Christoval (17-8) was led by a standout performance from freshman Kennison Green, who had 10 kills, 27 assists, 12 digs and 6 aces. 

Other top players for Christoval were Hannah Maier (16 kills, 3 blocks), Kylie Panter (11 kills, 16 digs), Jordyn Bruns (28 assists, 13 digs), Rylee Clayton (10 kills), Bostyn Jones (28 digs) and Kimbrey Earnshaw (16 digs).

Christoval (17-8) hosts Brady on Saturday.

Wall Closes Strong Against Jim Ned

In a matchup of state-ranked 3A teams, No. 11 Wall shook off a first-set loss to beat No. 15 Jim Ned 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.

It was yet another impressive win for Wall, which has claimed numerous wins over larger schools, including taking down three 6As.

The Lady Hawks improved to 20-4 overall and 2-0 in district play. They’ll host Sweetwater on Saturday. Jim Ned fell to 21-6, 2-1.

Other Results

Miles swept Sonora on Tuesday 26-24, 25-14, 25-19. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-11 and will visit Coleman on Saturday to start district play. Sonora (16-13) will host Water Valley on Saturday.

Ballinger lost in four sets to Forsan on Tuesday 25-19, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14. The Lady Cats have now had back-to-back losses after a nine-game winning streak. They’ll take a 15-10 record into the start of district play Saturday at Bangs as they look to earn the young program’s first playoff appearance. Forsan (17-12) will be an Buena Vista on Saturday.
