ARLINGTON— The Dallas Cowboys made a deal with the San Francisco 49ers for a much-talked-about backup quarterback.
On Friday, August 25, the Dallas Cowboys traded a 2024 fourth-round selection to the San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Trey Lance. Lance was the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and is only 23 years old. The 49ers announced earlier this week that Mr. Irrelevent, Brock Purdy, who was drafted with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, would be their starting quarterback, and another former first-round selection, Sam Darnold, would be his backup.
Lance took over the starting quarterback job at North Dakota State after Carson Wentz and Easton Stick. The young quarterback played his final season in college in 2020 and had a shortened season due to COVID-19. At 19 years old, Lance threw for over 1,100 yards and 28 touchdowns with no interceptions. While Lance has potential, injuries derailed his career.
It is probably worth noting as well that the 2021 NFL Draft was stacked. The ten selections after the 49ers traded up for Lance were:
- Atlanta Falcons- Kyle Pitts
- Cincinnati Bengals- Ja'Marr Chase
- Miami Dolphins- Jaylen Waddle
- Detroit Lions- Penei Sewell
- Carolina Panthers- Jaycee Horn
- Denver Broncos- Patrick Surtain
- Philadelphia Eagles- DeVonta Smith
- Chicago Bears- Justin Fields
- Dallas Cowboys- Micah Parsons
Now, Lance will get a chance to back up current Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who has done more than enough to start in the NFL. For a fourth-round pick, this is a low-risk/high-reward move if the Cowboys can develop Lance.
