Friday Night Rewind: Best Football Games and Performances From Week 3

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performances from Week 3 of the high school football season in West Texas and the Concho Valley:

Best game: Reagan County-Miles

This was an easy decision as the best game of the week after Reagan County beat Miles 45-43 in double overtime in a game that was a back-and-forth battle all night. Neither team ever led by more than six points. After each team scored in the first two overtimes, Reagan County finally claimed victory when Marquis Vargas found Dominic Johnson for a two-point conversion. Reagan County improved to 2-1, while Miles fell to 1-2. 

Biggest win: Olfen

The Olfen Mustangs won their first varsity game in program history when they went on the road and defeated Moran 45-14. Olfen’s program started in 2020, and the Mustangs had been knocking on the door of a victory with three losses last year by 10 points or less. They finally broke through in a big way as freshman quarterback Zander Martinez threw four TD passes, including three to Avian Bell. Olfen will try to build on this momentum when it hosts Lohn for homecoming this week.

Biggest surprise: Junction

Junction earned a 37-32 win over Ozona on Saturday in a game that showed the Eagles are still a team to be taken seriously after they lost most of their starters from last year’s group that went 13-1 and reached the state quarterfinals. Ozona seemed like it would have a big advantage in the trenches with its strong offensive line against Junction’s rebuilt line, but the Eagles more than held their own. They now have back-to-back wins after a season-opening 59-27 loss to Goldthwaite. They’ll be the underdog again this week, however, when they host Mason.

Most impressive win: Water Valley

The No. 8-ranked Wildcats lit up the scoreboard again in an 89-47 win over No. 10 Sands. It was the second consecutive win over a Top 10 team following their 93-90 thriller over then-No. 1 Rankin a week earlier. This Water Valley team is proving it’s still a state power despite losing five starters on both sides of the ball from last year’s state semifinal team. Branson Lacy continues to put up sensational numbers with 296 rushing yards and five TDs, along with 187 passing yards and five TDs, along with 15 tackles on defense.

Case for the defense: TLCA San Angelo

The Eagles’ 42-0 win over Winters on Thursday was their first shutout victory since a 41-0 victory over Stanton in 2023. They bent but didn’t break against the Blizzards, twice stonewalling them after they reached the 10-yard line. TLCA’s dominant performance has the Eagles off to a 2-1 start after back-to-back winless seasons in 2024 and ‘25.

Strong in defeat: Brady

The Brady Bulldogs are still searching for their first win of the season, but they showed impressive fight in a 34-17 loss to defending state champion Hamilton. Brady was within 21-17 heading into the fourth quarter before Hamilton put the game away. Brady will look to earn its first win when it travels to Ballinger this week.
