Robert Lee Girls and Boys Sweep Coke Co. Rivalry Night

BRONTE, TX-- The Robert Lee Steers and Lady Steers were both successful in taking down their intra-county rival Bronte on Thursday.

The Lady Steers used an extremely explosive second quarter to grab control for a 53-34 win over the Lady Longhorns in the first game of the doubleheader.

After Bronte trailed by just one point at 8-7 after the first quarter, it looked as though the game had the potential for a Coke County Rivalry Classic. Senior point guard Jayden Speary had all seven of Bronte's points in the first.

However, Robert Lee found another gear and scored 20 points in the second quarter behind Kaylee Puentez's 10 points. The senior had a pair of three-pointers in that frame as Robert Lee jumped out to a 28-14 lead at halftime. Those points came despite a tough press from Bronte that led to a few Robert Lee turnovers.

In the second half, Robert Lee didn't exactly cool off.

Puentez drained another three, Braylee Hood and Julissa Ureno combined for eight points and Robert Lee's defense held Bronte to just eight points as the Lady Steers grew their lead to 41-22 entering the fourth quarter.

Bronte found a slight offensive rhythm in the fourth and was able to temporarily chip away at Robert Lee's lead behind nine points from Kristen Stilley. Yet, Robert Lee matched Bronte's 12 points to close out the game and seal the win.

Puentez finished as the game-high scorer with 19 points. Hood finished with 13 points along with Bronte's Speary.

Robert Lee (18-4, 5-2) will next host district front-runner Veribest on Jan. 22.

Bronte (10-9, 3-5) will travel to Veribest on Jan. 25.

The Robert Lee Steers followed suit with the girls by dominating Bronte wire-to-wire for a 34-17 win on Thursday.

Robert Lee held Bronte to two points to take a 9-2 lead after the first quarter behind five points from Jayton Warren.

Bronte found a little rhythm for six points behind a three-pointer from Jadan Morgan. The downside is that Robert Lee posted nine points in the quarter to take an 18-8 lead into the half.

The Steers then kicked it up a notch with four points from Daniel Mendoza and a three-pointer from Julian Gamboa to extend their lead to 30-14 entering the fourth quarter.

Rance Siler scored Bronte's three points in the fourth quarter as the two teams simmered down to combine for just seven points.

Warren finished with 11 points for the game-high total. Julian Gamboa had a pair of threes in the win.

Morgan finished with six points for Bronte.

Robert Lee will host Veribest on Jan. 22.

Bronte will look to bounce back in a week when they travel to Veribest on Jan. 25.
