Wall Sends Multiple Athletes to State Track Meet

SAN ANGELO, TX — The 2024 High School Track and Field season is almost at its end with the only the state meet held in Austin every year left. At this point in the season, it is rare to find several athletes from around the Concho Valley still in contention, but this year, Wall High School is having a different kind of season.

At the Regional meet held last Thursday and Friday, April 18-19, the Hawks and Lady Hawks had several athletes qualify to run showcase their talents at the 2024 UIL State Meet in Austin held on May 2.

Briggs Jones leads the way for the Hawks. Jones set school records in the Long Jump (23’ 9 ½”) and Triple Jump (45’11 ½”) this season. He continued his success at the Regional Meet last week with a win in the Long Jump and a State qualifying 2nd place finish in the Long Jump. Jones also qualified for state in the 4x200 meter relay. Expect Jones to compete with the best a week from now to claim a state championship.

In the running events, the Hawks broke the Regional Meet record in the 4x200-meter relay a week ago. The team (Evan Boehle, Ruben Rivas, Hagyn Barbee, and Briggs Jones) will head to state to race again. In the 4x400-meter relay, Wall placed 3rd at regionals but still qualified in the wild card spot. The Hawks ran a season-best 3:19.67 earlier in the year. Evan Boehle, Mason Snowden, Hagyn Barbee, and Reid Robertson will represent the Hawks in this event at State.

Not to be forgotten, one of the Lady Hawks also qualified for the State Meet after her performance at Regionals this year. Lexi Slaughter, daughter of Wall’s Head Football and Track Coach, Craig Slaughter, qualified for the State Meet in the 400-meter dash with a personal best of 55.91. This is the 2nd year in a row that Slaughter has qualified for state in the 400, and she has improved her time over the past year.

The State Meet begins on Thursday, May 2, with 3A schools competing in the field events at 9 a.m. on Thursday and the running events in the afternoon.
