SONORA, TX-- The Sonora Lady Broncos picked up where they left off in their Tuesday win over Brackett.
To kick off their annual Spikefest Tournament, Sonora picked up a pair of sweeps over district foes Grape Creek and TLCA in Pool B.
The Lady Broncos beat Grape Creek 25-23 and 25-20 in that match.
Senior hitter Mary Kyle Johnson was the lynchpin for the Lady Bronco attack, tallying 10 of their 19 kills in that match.
Brae and Raeven Harris were second on the team with three kills each.
Johnson and Raeven Harris each notched a pair of blocks in the win.
That trio also put up six digs apiece to lead the team.
The Lady Broncos then found a more dominant form against TLCA, winning 25-16 and 25-14.
Once again, Johnson led the way offensively with 12 of the Lady Bronco’s 29 kills. Brae Harris came up with nine kills in the win.
Defensively, Raeven Harris couldn’t be stopped, digging out eight TLCA attacks.
Senior Avery Leamon posted a pair of blocks in the Lady Bronco’s second sweep of the day.
Harper is tied with Sonora after going 2-0 to start the tournament as well.
Grape Creek and TLCA both finished 0-2 after the first day.
In Pool A, Sterling City went 2-1 to open the tournament with wins over Brady and Cornerstone.
The Lady Eagles opened up the tournament with a dominant sweep of the Lady Bulldogs, winning 25-12 and 25-6.
Sterling City needed three sets to beat Cornerstone. The Lady Eagles won the first set 25-15, lost 25-21 in the second and won the third set 25-13.
Their lone loss came against Reagan County in three sets. Sterling City captured the first set 25-18 before the Lady Owls won 25-17 and 25-15 in the next two sets.
Junction also opened up 2-1 on day one with a pair of sweeps.
The Lady Eagles swept Cornerstone 25-19 and 25-16 in their opener before sweeping Reagan County by the same scores.
Brackett handed Junction their lone loss of the tournament so far in a three set thriller.
Brackett leads Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record after the first day.
Only three games are on the schedule tomorrow and play continues through Saturday.
