Central's Davis One of Three Finalists for THSCA Presidency

SAN ANGELO, TX-- Next week, at the Texas High School Coaches Association Convention in San Antonio, a new THSCA president will be elected.

Central’s Brent Davis was named one of three finalists for the association’s presidency.

Rockwall’s Rodney Webb and Longview’s John King are the other two.

The winner will be announced next Tuesday, July 24, at the end of the final day of the THSCA Coaching School.

The list of Central coaches to serve as the THSCA President is short and illustrious.

If Davis were to win the presidency, he would be just the third San Angelo Central coach to serve as the president. The other two were Jimmie Keeling in the 1988-1989 academic year and Emory Bellard in the 1966-1967 academic year.

Bellard spent seven seasons as the Bobcat’s head coach and posted a 59-19-2 record that included a State Championship in 1966.

Keeling was the Bobcat’s head coach for 10 seasons from 1979 to 1988 and posted a 59-42-3 record at Central.

However, it would be tough to argue that any previous coach had an impact like Davis and his staff have had since arriving in the Concho Valley in 2009.

From the turn of the millenia to Davis’ arrival, the Bobcats had just one winning season and were in the middle of a District Championship drought that dated back to 1998.

After debuting with a 2-8 record in 2009, the Davis-led Bobcats began a run of form that has never been seen before by the Orange and Blue faithful.

In 2010, the Bobcats made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. The Bobcats have not missed the playoffs since.

In 2011, the Bobcats ended their 14-year run without a district championship. Two years later, the Bobcats began their current streak of five-straight district titles.

Davis is also the Bobcats winningest coach with a 76-31 record in nine seasons at Central.

Davis would also join an elite club of West Texas coaches to serve as THSCA president.

Steve Warren from Abilene High was the most recent West Texas coach to serve as president with his stint from 2013-2014. Before him, Abilene Wylie’s Hugh Sandifer served as president from 2005-2006.

Abilene Cooper’s Randy Allen, now the head coach at Highland Park, served as the president from 1995 to 1996.

It’s also worth noting that former Lake View head coach Jim Slaughter served as the association’s president from 1991 to 1992.
