Wall Kicker Signs to ASU

WALL, TX—The Fort Concho Cannon won’t be the only cannon at Angelo State football games in the near future.

Wall kicker Mitchell Horton, a three year varsity player, signed to continue his academic and athletic career with the Rams at ASU.

“It’s not every day that we get to sign players,” Wall Head Coach Houston Guy said on Thursday. “This year we’ve been fortunate and Mitchell will be our third guy to sign.”

A week ago, Casey Braden and Tymber Carr also signed with the Rams.

Horton’s journey continuing just down the road from his hometown is a dream come true for the Hawk.

“[Signing] is something I’ve been looking forward to for all year,” Horton said. “I went to a few camps [with Kicking World] and my coach helped me with my recruiting.”

Playing somewhere where his family could see him play and at a place where he knew people ultimately influenced Horton’s decision to stay home.

The atmosphere at Wall High School will be tough for the soon-to-be graduate.

“I’m going to miss the coaches because they really like to work with each kid and better you,” Horton said. “Also, [I’ll miss] my friends who are moving on.”

Typically, small towns don’t carry a specific kicker. Usually the player with the strongest leg, or a quarterback, is the kicker on these small town teams.

“A kicker is usually one of those positions where you don’t really appreciate until you don’t have one,” Guy said. “Now that Mitchell is leaving, it’s one of those things where maybe we have taken him for granted over the last couple of years because he has been so consistent.”

Horton kicked every game in 2017 and was 70-77 on extra points and 3-5 on field goals for Wall.
