Gas Prices Continue Falling, Still 60 Cents Higher Than Last Independence Day

SAN ANGELO, TX - The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.34 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

That price is two cents less when compared to this day last week and is 60 cents more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.60 per gallon, while drivers in Laredo are paying the least at $3.16 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.84, which is eight cents less when compared to this day last week and 67 cents more when compared to this day last year.

In San Angelo, gas prices are currently averaging around $3.53 per gallon. That's 12 cents higher than a week ago and 71 cents higher than this time last year.

While fuel prices remain higher than a year ago and are at their highest level in four years, drivers are seeing welcome relief compared with this spring. The national average peaked at $4.56 per gallon on May 21, but pump prices have steadily declined as crude oil prices have fallen to their lowest levels in months, recently trading in the $60-per-barrel range. The continued downward trend is encouraging news for Texans taking Independence Day road trips.

“Gas prices remain higher than drivers have seen in recent years leading into Independence Day, but the steady decline since late May is providing some much-needed relief at the pump,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Lower crude oil prices are helping push fuel costs down during one of the busiest driving periods of the year, which should be welcome news for summer travelers.”
