SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo storage facility owner is suing a food truck catering company, alleging an explosion and fire from a leased unit caused more than $293,000 in property damage and forced the relocation of multiple tenants.
Mertzon Hwy./Affordable RV & Shop Rentals LLC, which operates Affordable Storage at 6566 S. US Highway 67, filed the lawsuit against Pias German Foodtruck & Catering LLC in the 340th District Court of Tom Green County.
According to the plaintiff’s original petition, the company leased Unit 335 — a 14-by-30-foot space with an overhead door — to the defendant for parking its food truck trailer. On March 23, 2025, shortly before midnight, an explosion originated from the defendant’s unit, sparking a fire that caused significant damage to the facility, the petition states. Video footage reviewed by the plaintiff showed the blast came from the defendant’s unit, which housed the food truck, and destroyed or damaged units 331 through 339 and 350 through 357, along with interior walls, roofs and other structures. The incident forced the relocation of all tenants due to property damage and loss of electricity.
The suit claims the defendant was in exclusive possession and control of the unit and the food truck at the time. It alleges negligence under the legal doctrine of res ipsa loquitur, arguing the explosion was the type that ordinarily does not occur without negligence and that the defendant owed a duty of reasonable care to protect the plaintiff’s property from foreseeable harm.
The plaintiff is seeking monetary relief over $250,000 but no more than $1 million.
The defendant entered a general denial of all allegations and demanded a jury trial.
The case remains ongoing.
