ASU Chemistry Department Awarded $75,000 Grant for Research Equipment

SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Houston-based Welch Foundation to purchase new equipment that will support student research, research training and education.

Awarded through the Welch Foundation's Equipment Grant Program, the funding will support the purchase of the following items for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry:

  • Fluorescence Spectrometer for use in analytical and physical chemistry
  • ThermoScientific Ultra-Low Freezer to store cell cultures for biochemical research
  • Research-Grade, 32-Core Dell Computer to handle large data sets and complex calculations

"These instruments will enable our students to conduct chemical analysis in a timelier manner, at a higher level of sensitivity, and more cost efficiently," said Dr. Kyle A. Beran, department chair. "The fluorescence spectrometer will support undergraduate research, enhance hands-on training across multiple chemistry subdisciplines, and strengthen our ability to deliver high-impact experiential learning aligned with current analytical science practices."

"The ultra-low freezer will be used for storage of temperature-sensitive samples, including cell cultures, competent bacterial cells and kits for DNA cloning," Beran added. "The addition of the 32-core computer will allow for more student participation in various research efforts, as well as for performing time-consuming vibrational and thermodynamic calculations more expeditiously."

This latest grant from the Welch Foundation follows closely on the heels of a three-year, $165,000 grant awarded to Angelo State in November 2025 that supports Welch Scholarships and hands-on research opportunities for ASU students, faculty research efforts and recruiting highly-motivated students.

ASU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a long-standing relationship with the Welch Foundation, which has now provided the department nearly $1 million in research and equipment funding over the last 20 years.
