SAN ANGELO, TX — Retired K-9 Officer Vader, a dual-purpose patrol dog who helped seize large quantities of drugs and assisted in hundreds of arrests during his service with the San Angelo Police Department, has died. He was laid to rest Feb. 6, 2026.
The department announced the passing with deep sadness, noting that Vader served faithfully alongside his handler, Officer Tumlinson. As a dual-purpose K-9 trained in narcotics detection and criminal apprehension, Vader contributed to the seizure of approximately 60 pounds of marijuana, 14 pounds of methamphetamine, 233 grams of cocaine, and 164 grams of heroin. He also played a role in the arrests of 285 individuals.
Vader frequently engaged with the public, educating hundreds — if not thousands — of community members about law enforcement and K-9 operations.
He retired on March 14, 2023, and spent his post-service years as a companion to Officer Tumlinson and his family, including being present for the arrival of Tumlinson's children. In retirement, Vader enjoyed a relaxed life, often sleeping on the bed and barking at birds or passersby.
Officer Tumlinson shared that Vader's health declined recently due to heart issues. On the morning of Feb. 6, Vader was humanely euthanized while comfortably lying in the sun, surrounded by loved ones. Tumlinson thanked Los Caballos Veterinary Clinic for years of care and for making a home visit that day.
The San Angelo Police Department extended condolences to Officer Tumlinson, his family, and all who knew Vader, thanking him for his dedication and service. "Rest easy, K9 Vader. Your watch is complete," the department stated. Vader's end of watch is listed as Feb. 6, 2026.
