SAN ANGELO, TX - Angelo State University, in partnership with the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, will present the first installment of the U.S.A. 250th Anniversary Speaker Series on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. in the Fort Concho Commissary at 704 Burgess St. downtown.
Dr. Kenna Archer of the ASU history faculty will kick off the speaker series with a special presentation on the American Revolution titled "Writing an Origin Story: The American Revolution and the 'Cause of All Mankind.'" The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
An associate professor of history, Archer will explore the causes of the American Revolution, which originated as a New England dispute over taxation and evolved into a contest over democracy and individual rights. Indeed, the signing of the Declaration of Independence was a monumental event with global implications, but as late as January 1776, many people living in the British colonies remained uncertain about the question of independence. Archer will also discuss the incidents and developments that ultimately persuaded many colonists to support the war for independence.
ASU's Dr. Arnoldo De Leon Department of History is partnering with Fort Concho to present the series of public speaker programs on the American Revolution to highlight our nation's 250th anniversary. Future presentations are scheduled for February, March and April at sites that will alternate between Fort Concho and ASU.
