SNAP Benefits Could Stop This Weekend if Congress Fails to Act

SAN ANGELO, TX — Thousands of families in San Angelo and across the Concho Valley could lose access to food assistance as soon as this weekend if Congress fails to reach a deal to fund the federal government.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission confirmed that no Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be issued in November if the shutdown extends past Oct. 27. The program supports more than 3.5 million Texans, including about 12,000 residents in Tom Green County, who rely on SNAP to buy groceries each month.

The potential halt in benefits has local food pantries preparing for an increase in demand. The Concho Valley Regional Food Bank and San Angelo Food Bank both serve families throughout West Texas, while organizations like Rust Street Ministries continue to provide free food, clothing, and household items to those in need.

The San Angelo Food Bank will host its next mobile distribution on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 90 E. 14th St. in San Angelo. Registration will be available at the start of the event, and supplies will be handed out as supplies last.

Rust Street Ministries, located at 803 Rust St., provides food and essential goods through donations and volunteer support. The organization is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, assisting those in need of groceries, clothing, and household items.

Project Dignidad at also offers emergency food boxes and operates through community donations.

Statewide, the suspension of SNAP would halt more than $614 million in monthly benefits, including aid for an estimated 1.7 million children. With Thanksgiving approaching, food banks say they expect longer lines and greater strain on resources if the shutdown continues into November.
