SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Yesterday’s city council meeting began with a short performance by local musician Case Hardin. Afterwards, city council members discussed Mayor Morrison’s new Wellness Partnership, approved re-zoning and construction proposals, and heard an update on the Bell Street construction project.
Mayor Morrison’s Wellness Partnership program is called “Tell Hunger to Take a Hike” and is a joint effort with the Texas Hunger Initiative Coalition. Mayor Morrison’s program “exists to encourage, educate and empower the community through programs that promote a healthier body, mind and spirit.” The new program is a part of a free eight-week program where teams of eight will walk 830 miles towards a healthier lifestyle. The event will kick off on March 19 at Kirby Park from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. To register a team, please visit [email protected]. City Engineer Russell Pehl also updated city council members on the Bell Street Construction Project. As previously reported, the Bell Street project is one of several projects involved in a 10-year, $80 million plan to rebuild the worst streets in San Angelo. Bell Street will be rebuilt from Rio Concho Drive to Old Ballinger Highway in three stages. Tuesday, Pehl confirmed that the design plans are in the process of being finalized and stated that construction would begin in the fall. Lastly, the city council members approved various ordinances requesting rezoning of several San Angelo locations. One of the discussed properties was the land currently set aside to house the new county jail. The property owner is currently seeking $400,000 in grant monies for construction of the sewer system; however, in order to qualify, the land must lie outside of the city limits. Council members voted to begin the process of disannexing the property.
New commercial businesses are scheduled to come to San Angelo as well this year. New commercial buildings are scheduled to appear in the strip mall, which currently houses stores such as Target, Ross, and Bed Bath and Beyond. A new restaurant is also on the horizon. The new food venue, at this time still anonymous, is scheduled to pop-up at the intersection of Knickerbocker Road and University Avenue.

The next city council meeting is scheduled to take place on February 21, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. As always, all city council meetings are open to the public.
