SAN ANGELO, TX –– After weeks of controversy and intense debate, the City Council of San Angelo officially issued a proclamation regarding the right to life.
During a previous meeting, Mayor Brenda Gunter and council members voted to only issue a proclamation instead of adopting an ordinance. The following proclamation was issued during Tuesday's meeting.
"The City Council of San Angelo strives to further pursue wholeheartedly the vision of being the Texas standard for opportunity, prosperity, and quality of life."
"The City Council of San Angelo supports the right to life for all San Angelo citizens, beginning in the womb and throughout the individual’s lifespan. This involves standing against all injustice, giving awareness and attention to issues that affect our citizens, and advocating for a better San Angelo in all facets."
"The City Council of San Angelo believes the protection of all human life is important to the people of the City of San Angelo. The City Council of San Angelo believes human life begins at conception and continues, uninterrupted, until the moment of natural death. The City Council of San Angelo believes all human life must be protected."
"The City Council hereby makes a committed effort to support and protect the health, welfare, and life of all residents within the city of San Angelo, from conception until natural death, by standing in support of the Texas Legislature’s commitment to life through the implementation of legislation protecting unborn human life."
" Therefore, I, Brenda Gunter, Mayor of the City of San Angelo, Texas, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim San Angelo as a city SUPPORTIVE OF ALL EFFORTS TO PROMOTE LIFE within our community from the time of conception and call upon all residents to work to create a community where all life is respected, and all families are supported, providing the structure for all to live peacefully in unity."
Any efforts to make San Angelo Sanctuary City for the Unborn will have to be made by supporters who put the measure to a vote on a ballot.
