SAN ANGELO, TX — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials stocked about 600 channel catfish into the Concho River in downtown San Angelo on Friday as part of the state’s Neighborhood Fishin’ Program.
The fish were released near the river section between Oakes and Irving streets. Stockings will continue every two weeks through the end of October, with the next scheduled release on April 25. The program aims to make fishing more accessible by placing fish in urban waters across Texas.
“Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes are conveniently located in urban and suburban areas to provide a great fishing experience where most Texas residents live,” said Marcos DeJesus, TPWD Inland Fisheries Division Region Three Director. “Catfish are fun and easy to catch for anglers of all ages and experience levels. If you’ve never fished before, these are the perfect places to get started. If you are an experienced angler, these are the perfect places to introduce fishing to a friend or family member.”
Each participating lake or river location will receive biweekly catfish deliveries, except for a brief pause in August. The statewide program includes 18 locations, including San Angelo, Austin, San Antonio, and other major cities.
Anglers can keep up to five fish of any kind (all species combined) per day with one black bass 14 inches or greater in length. Adults are required to have a fishing license, which starts at $11 for a one-day pass or $30 for an annual freshwater license. Youths under 17 do not need a license. All proceeds go toward the management of the fisheries, providing access and conservation of Texas fish and their habitats.
