SAN ANGELO – It's hot outside and getting hotter; so much so that all of West Texas is under an Excessive Heat Warning for the next few days with temperatures expected to soar past 110 degrees.
The National Weather Service is warning of excessive heat of 105 to 111 degrees with a heat index as high as 118 between now and Wednesday.
Extreme heat and humidity will combine to create dangerous conditions for anyone working or participating in outdoor activities.
Officials are warning residents to stay inside an air-conditioned room during the afternoon hours if at all possible. If not, drink plenty of fluids, stay in the shade and out of the sun as much as possible. Wear hats and gloves and loose fitting long sleeve clothing.
Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors. And never, ever leave a child or a pet locked in a hot car. That can only lead to tragedy and is also a crime.
For outdoor pets, make sure they have plenty of fresh water daily along with ample shade and food. Better yet, bring them inside with you.
The high Monday is forecast at 110 degrees with Tuesday reaching 111 before dropping slightly Wednesday afternoon to 108. Look for temperatures to exceed 100 degrees for the next 14 days.
It is highly unusual for an Excessive Heat Warning to extend for days, even here in the desert. This is a dangerous and possibly life threatening situation and should be taken very seriously.
