SAN ANGELO – The continuing Heat Advisory in effect for West Texas through Friday could be upgraded and extended as early as today to an Excessive Heat Warning as triple digit heat rises to a dangerous 106+ with a hotter weekend on the way.
Water in area rivers and lakes is drying up as the excessive and ongoing heat wave evaporates the precious resource into thin air. Triple digit heat combines with low humidity and gusty winds to evaporate the water so rapidly you can almost watch ponds dry up and shore lines recede.
Thursday's forecast high of 104 degrees will likely not set a record which now stands at 108, but by Sunday, expect temps to soar above 106 in the Concho Valley.
Some weather models are teasing a slight chance of some relief come mid-week next week with a cold front dropping near the Abilene area but that chance is very remote at this time. The likely scenario is that the San Angelo area will close out the month of July with afternoon high temperatures above 100 degrees every day.
That means that you still can't leave children or pets in a hot car no matter what. And take plenty of breaks in the shade if you are going to be outside working or playing; drink plenty of fluids and check on vulnerable friends and family.
This is a serious and dangerous weather situation.
