SAN ANGELO – The San Angelo Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI) held its eighth annual Hunters Extravaganza banquet Saturday night at the First Financial Pavilion and set records for fundraising and attendance again in 2022.
The mission of SCI is to protect the freedom to hunt and to promote wildlife conservation worldwide while its purposes are as follows: To advocate preserve and protect the rights of all hunters. To promote safe, legal and ethical hunting and related activities.
Alan McClain, SCI San Angelo Chapter President, said, "These fundraising banquets help our mission in many ways. 30% of our net proceeds from this banquet go to the National organization to help with the overall mission and in 2021, the San Angelo Chapter was #2 in the world regarding monies given back to SCI. We keep 70% to distribute locally towards our own conservation, education and humanitarian efforts and your San Angelo Chapter has dispersed over $633,000 since its inception in 2014."

McClain says the San Angelo Chapter raised around $225,000 at the banquet Saturday night between the live and silent auctions and the bucket raffles.
"We sold 50 tables at the banquet last year. This year, we sold 63 tables and we plan on selling 70 in 2023." said McClain.
They also sold 53 new memberships to the local SCI chapter Saturday at the banquet.
The funds raised by the San Angelo SCI go to many endowments, scholarship funds and youth oriented events as well as conservation efforts.
In 2021, the San Angelo SCI chapter awarded grants totaling $107,000 to the following:
- Angelo State University Foundation Scholarships
- ASU Shooting Sports
- ASU Scholarship Endowment
- Buckskin Brigade
- Children's Advocacy Center
- Hunting with Soldiers
- Orion Shooting Sports
- Texas Brigades
- Texas Youth Hunting
- TPWD Mule Deer Special Study
- West Texas Rehab
Since its inception in 2014, the San Angelo SCI chapter has awarded $633,440 in grants. The San Angelo chapter of SCI was started by a group of individuals who have common values in wildlife conservation. Although diversified in their professional backgrounds, each holds a true vision and passion for conservation on a local, national and international level.
