According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, nearly five dozen deaths were identified in three main ways:

  • Medical certifiers submitting a DSHS form specifying that a particular death was related to a disaster.

  • Medical certifiers flagging a death record as disaster-related.

  • DSHS epidemiologists matching public reports of disaster-related deaths to death certificates.

"The majority of verified deaths were associated with hypothermia," said DSHS in a statement. "There have also been multiple deaths caused by motor vehicle accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning, medical equipment failure, falls, and fire."

My husband died Feb. 15. He had heart problems and couldn't regulate his body temperature. When the electricity went out he couldn't get warm. He died an hour later. Make that 58 deaths because the cause of his death was listed as pulminary.
