Abilene Reports at Least Three Weather Related Deaths

ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Fire Department has confirmed three people died due to the sub-zero temperatures in the city this week.

According to Abilene Fire Chief Cande Flores, one victim was a homeless man in his 50s or early 60s who died from exposure. His body was found around 6:00 a.m. at the corner of Walnut and N 6th streets. According to law enforcement, the man refused help from police and family members.

The second victim was a man who froze inside his own home on Wednesday. The man and his wife were found on a recliner after they spent three days without power.

The man died from the cold and his wife was rushed to the hospital.

The third victim had medical issues and didn’t have access to the resources they needed.

"We know that most deaths can be prevented. The things that we see are usually traumatic," said Flores. "So when we get called to those instances, they all have some sort of regret to them one way or another. We don’t like seeing it. But we continue doing our job and we continue to get ready for the next call.”
