The End of an Era: Midland ISD to Choose New Name for Robert E. Lee High School

MIDLAND, TX -- The fate of the Robert E. Lee Rebels will be decided this afternoon during a special session of the Midland ISD School Board.

After weeks of deliberation and a long list of names, the school board will choose the new name shortly after 5:30 p.m.

The Citizens' Renaming Committee recommended the name Midland Legacy of Equality and Excellence High School or L.E.E. High School for short.

The school board will also be able to choose from the top three choices which include the previous name mentioned and Midland Legacy of Equality and Excellence High School.

In addition to the name changes the committee selected potential mascots and colors.

The Rebel mascot was considered for all names, but with a clarification.

"The committee’s depiction of the new Rebel mascot represents the Revolutionary War period. There will be no imagery associated with the Confederacy."
