Odessa Police Arrest Teen in Morning Shooting Near Permian HS

ODESSA, TX — Odessa police arrested a 17-year-old suspect Monday morning in connection with a shooting near a Burger King that left an 18-year-old man in critical condition, authorities said.

A'Zachiah Lee Henson is in custody following the incident in the 1900 block of East 42nd Street, according to a statement from the Odessa Police Department. The victim, Nathan Gonzalez, was shot in the chest and transported to Medical Center Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers responded around 8:20 a.m. to reports of a gunshot victim near the Burger King location. The investigation determined the two males had been fighting when Henson allegedly drew a firearm and shot Gonzalez, police said. Gonzalez received immediate medical attention before being taken to the hospital.

Henson fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward at a residence in the 4200 block of Bonham. The investigation remains active.

The shooting prompted Permian High School, located nearby, to briefly place the campus in "secure" status as a precaution. School officials later lifted the status, and students returned to normal schedules. Ector County Independent School District Police assisted Odessa police with the response and investigation.

Authorities described the incident as isolated.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Odessa police at 432-333-3641 or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-333-TIPS.
