BRECKENRIDGE, TX – A 14-year-old murder case in Stephens County has been solved, authorities announced Friday.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Jimmy Earl Whitt was found murdered in his home on January 18, 2010. Despite an initial investigation by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, Breckenridge Police, and the Texas Rangers, the case went cold in 2015 due to a lack of evidence.

In 2024, the Texas Rangers’ Unsolved Crime Investigation Program reopened the case, leading to new interviews and evidence that identified Charles Larry Johnson as the suspect. Johnson had previously been linked to Whitt’s death but had not been charged. Investigators found firearms and jewelry from Whitt’s residence in Johnson’s possession.

The case was presented to the 90th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which determined there was enough evidence to prosecute Johnson. However, it was discovered that Johnson had died in March 2022.
