West Texas School District Cancels Classes Due to Escaped Inmate from County Jail

 

NEW DEAL, TX – The New Deal Independent School District on Thursday morning canceled classes after an inmate escaped from the Hall County Jail.

According to multiple reports, on Nov. 17 at around 3 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety was alerted by the Hall County Sheriff's Office that an inmate, Gary Darnell, 48, from the Hall County Jail had escaped.

Somehow Darnell had gotten in possession of a vehicle and was heading to Lubbock. DPS did spot the vehicle on I-27 and a short chase occurred. Darnell eventually crashed his vehicle I-27 and Loop 461 and proceeded on foot.  

A DPS helicopter and a number of other local law enforcement was called to the scene. After a few hours of searching Darnell was taken into custody. This was around 10 a.m.

Because of the escapee New Deal schools at first delayed for two hours. They ultimately cancelled classes for the day.
