Wanted Suspect Attempts to Evade San Angelo Police by Hiding in a Tree

SAN ANGELO – Officers with the San Angelo Police Department experienced a real Zacchaeus moment on Tuesday after a wanted suspect refused to come out of a tree.

According to the San Angelo Police Department, on Jul. 13, 2022, at around 1:00 p.m., officers with the SAPD were searching for suspect who was wanted for a felony assault. During their search police located Joey G. Gonzales, 42, of San Angelo, at a home in the 1700 block of Hassell St.

Once Gonzales spotted the officers he attempted to evade them by getting on the roof of his house. The officers attempted to get him off the roof peacefully but Gonzales did not surrender.

The SAPD then attempted to get on the roof as well. This move however just pushed Gonzales up the tree in the front yard of the residence.

The officers continued to try and plea with the man to get out of the tree but Gonzales refused.

"It was decided that officers would conduct surveillance from a distance and wait for Gonzales to come out of the tree," stated Public Information Officer for the SAPD Richard Espinoza. "Gonzales was observed exiting the tree and officers were then able to take Gonzales into custody for Injury to the Elderly and Evading Arrest/Detention on foot."

Gonzales remains in the Tom Green County Detention Facility as of 2 p.m. His bond is set at $15,000.
