Abilene Experiences Spike in Catalytic Converter Thefts

ABILENE, TX- Abilene has experienced 20 catalytic converter thefts in 2022 alone.

Since January 1st, Abilene has had 20 catalytic converter thefts and the Abilene Police Department has issued tips on how to help prevent such thefts from happening. The police have said to park in a well-lit area, in an enclosed parking garage, if possible, install home security cameras like doorbell cameras, and have said to speak with other individuals in your neighborhood to increase surveillance.

Also, if you see anything suspicious, call the police. Thieves target the catalytic converter due to the precious metals like rhodium, palladium, and platinum.

This week alone, Abilene has had three thefts and both business and personal vehicles have been targeted.

One way to prevent thefts is to etch your license plate number into the converter. Also, police have said to park in well-lit areas and in enclosed parking garages when possible.

Last week, an individual was hit by the thieves as they escaped after stealing a catalytic converter and early last month, the Angelo State University Police were searching for catalytic converter thief.
