Angelo State University Police Searching for Catalytic Converter Thief

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State University Police are currently searching for a catalytic converter thief on campus.

According to the Angelo State Police Department, officers with University Police are investigating the reported theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked in the University Center parking lot. The theft occurred sometime on Apr. 11 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Thieves steal the catalytic converters for the precious metals inside, which are later sold. This is a rising type of theft across the country and takes only minutes to remove from a vehicle.

The theft is performed by crawling underneath a vehicle and using a saw to remove the converter.

Please immediately report any suspicious activity to campus police. Be especially vigilant for people who may appear to be working on a vehicle.

Further precautions include, welding the catalytic converter to the vehicle's frame, installing an anti-theft device, engraving your vehicle's VIN number or license plate number onto the converter and park in well-lit high traffic areas.
