Former Juvenile Probation Officer Sentenced for Crimes Against Children

SAN ANGELO – A former juvenile probation officer was sentenced to deferred adjudication Tuesday morning after pleading guilty to two counts of crimes against children.

According to court documents, on Sep. 7, John Cahill pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography in exchange for 10 years deferred adjudication probation.

San Angelo LIVE! first reported, on Feb. 10, 2020, that Cahill, a former juvenile probation officer, was arrested for possession of child pornography.

The charge came after a nearly ten month investigation involving the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office.

It started on May 14, 2019 when a deputy received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip claimed a Facebook marketing group found multiple images while attempting to check advertisement performance.

Members with the company described the images as children dressed in highly inappropriate clothing.

After nearly a month, the IP address was searched and the computer was located at the home of John Cahill. Cahill told deputies that the day the company came he had been on the computer. He then consented to a search of his computer.

Deputies found hundreds of lewd images of children. Cahill admitted to downloading the pictures. He also claimed he deleted them because he knew they were illegal. The images were assessed and eight children were identified. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children one of the children has been rescued.

Cahill was booked and released from the Tom Green County Jail the same day after posting a $15,000 bond.

He was later indicted on two counts of possession of child pornography on September 10, 2020. After nearly a year of hearings Cahill pleaded guilty to the two counts.

On top of the 10 years probation, Cahill will have to pay a $2,500 bond.
