San Angelo Couple Indicted for Causing a Brain Injury to a Child

SAN ANGELO, TX – A San Angelo couple was indicted in April for seriously injuring an infant.

According to court documents, on Apr. 7, Shalyn Brannon and Jarrett Mays were indicted for causing the injury to their infant.

The case began after an officer with the San Angelo Police Department received a CPS report that accused Jarrett Mays of dropping the infant. In the report it stated that the child suffered a subdural hematoma which required surgery at Cook Children's Medical Center in Ft. Worth.

The officer then interviewed Mays. On Feb. 2 Mays said that Brannon went to work and he was in charge of watching the kids including the child. At one point Mays told officers that the baby would not stop crying so he picked the baby up and shook it for two or three seconds.

After he shook the baby he said that he shook the baby hard enough that it looked to be dizzy after being shaken, had stopped moving, and stopped crying. He then texted Brannon and said that he had shaken the baby again.

This led officers to learn of another incident that occurred around last Halloween. Mays told officers that on that night "he was going nuts" and picked up the baby and shook it. During the episode Mays screamed at the baby to stop crying.

Brannon witnessed the first assault and told Mays that she did not ever want to see that again.

Brannon was then interviewed by SAPD. She told officers that Mays had been talking about committing suicide and since Sept. had to seek medical treatment. Brannon stated that Mays was put on a controlled substance prescription for the suicidal thoughts.

She claimed that around Oct. Mays had been doubling up on the pills. This is when the first incident happened. Brannon said that during the assault she saw Mays holding the baby under the arms screaming at it followed by the baby's head bob and rock back and forth.

Brannon claimed that she screamed at Mays to stop and then intervened and stopped Mays. Mays told her that night that he was having anger problems towards his kids and that he did not feel attached to the baby like their other child.

A few days prior to the second assault Brannon says that Mays had run out of pills and so Brannon had given him some of her prescribed medication.

Police arrested both of them that day. Mays was charged with assault of a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury. Brannon was charged with abandoning and endangering a child by putting the child in imminent danger.

Police charged Brannon after learning that she knew the dangers associated with May's mental health, controlled substance prescription abuse and anger towards the baby.

Mays initial pretrial is set for May 25. Brannon's initial pretrial is set for June 22.

Brannon was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on Feb. 25 and was released the same day on a $30,000 bond. Mays was booked in to the jail on Feb. 2 and was released on Apr. 19 on a $50,000 bond.
