New Details of ASU Baseball Player's Arrest in Fatal Crash

SAN ANGELO, TX – The affidavit for the arrest of Angelo State University pitcher was released on Monday. New details include where they found his truck, how they located the baseball player, and much more.

According to court documents, on Mar. 18 at 6 a.m., an officer with the San Angelo Police Department was running LIDAR near the intersection of S. Bryant and W. Avenue J and noticed a Silver SUV that was traveling south at a high rate of speed.

The officer turned his emergency lights on and attempted to pull the SUV over. Instead of stopping the SUV accelerated and struck a dark colored truck in the intersection, the SUV spun around and collided with a light pole. This caused the driver to be ejected from the vehicle.

Another passenger in the vehicle was taken to the hospital where they later died from their injuries.

After the crash the dark colored truck fled the scene without attempting to render aid. Officers found the truck on Loop 306 westbound, east of Knickerbocker. The officers check the registration and the vehicle came back as out of Chico, California. The truck was registered to 24-year-old Benjamin Elder.

Another piece of evidence that was found was the Angelo State parking pass that was hanging on the truck's rearview mirror. Police were able to get Elder's home address with the pass.

Elder was then located inside of a residence on the 2500 block of A&M. Elder admitted to crashing and fleeing the scene to officers during the arrest.

Elder was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Facility on Mar. 18 for Accident Involving Death. He was released the following day on a $30,000 surety bond.

He was not the one at fault! And why havent you told us why four kids would be out at 6 a m on springbreak and running from police. Why report on him?

Especially San Angelo and TGC law enforcement. Hell even their own ex police chief is a criminal. DO NOT talk to TGC law enforcement without a lawyer! EVER

I agree.  What were these minors going at 6:00 a.m.?  I know Elder's vehicle hit their car but he was not at fault.  Unfortunately he did leave the scene but the minors were at fault by speeding and running the red light while being followed by police.  If anything, they should have charged all the minors and not Elder.
