Known Felon Flees from San Angelo Police, Whereabouts Unclear

 

SAN ANGELO, TX — A known felon has escaped the mighty hands of the law and was reported to be running from police on San Angelo’s north side.

Police activity is heavy near the intersection of N. Bryant Ave. and 23rd St. Police said they are looking for Nelson Estrada who is on foot. He was last seen at around 8:25 p.m. near 2400 Lillie St. Estrada is a Hispanic male, 32 years old, and is wearing a black shirt with jean shorts. Police believe he is traveling eastbound from Nueva Vista. Court records state Estrada is 5’ 5” and weighs 170 pounds.

Estrada is wanted on three felonies: Unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, evading arrest, and evading arrest with a previous conviction for same that stemmed from what police said was Estrada’s fleeing a traffic stop in a vehicle police suspected was stolen. He crashed the vehicle near Concho Ave. and S. Chadbourne St. downtown and ran from the vehicle. He was located and then arrested moments later during the January 23, 2021 incident. He was indicted on March 4.

Officer Craig Thomason said Estrada was at the Nueva Vista Apartments, 2401 N. Lillie St., when police got involved. Thomason was reluctant to provide many details but did state that Estrada “broke out” of an apartment there and fled on foot eastbound. Police deployed a K9 unit that got on the scent of Estrada. However, he was not found, at least not yet.

Thomason said Estrada likely has fled the area and he did not believe Estrada is an immediate danger to the area. However, Thomason said that if a citizen spots him to not approach him; just call police.

At the scene, the San Angelo Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and crime scene investigators are working a crime scene. We do not know what crime was committed this evening there other than evading police.

Estrada has a long criminal record in Tom Green County. Charges include drug possession, burglary, and frequent evading arrest charges, and firearms charges. His crime spree in the county began in 2005 when he was accused of threatening witnesses prior to a trial.

As of 9:20 p.m. March 11, 2021, Estrada was still at-large. Yesterday, police issued a bulletin asking for his whereabouts for arrest. Estrada is a wanted man.
