Teen Gunman Indicted in Ben Ficklin Shooting

 

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Months after two teens were arrested in connection to the shooting of a 15-year-old girl the alleged shooter has been formally indicted.

According to the indictment, the victim told officers she saw Esai Lopez, 18, at the Ben Ficklin reservoir. According to the victim, she believes Lopez shot her because during an earlier altercation he had threatened to shoot her and brandished the gun.

The gunshot to the victim's left tibia damaged an artery. She was initially treated at San Angelo Community Center but was later transferred to University Medical Center in Lubbock for further treatment.

During the investigation, San Angelo Police Department officers were able to ascertain certain facts about the case.

One witness told police Lopez owned a black handgun. A second witness confirmed Lopez was known to carry guns and that he has seen Lopez with a black Glock 43 9mm. A third witness confirmed she personally saw Lopez with the black handgun at the Ben Ficklin Reservoir.

Investigators located multiple 9mm shell casings scattered on the ground at the scene.

Additionally, a crime scene technician conducted a Gunshot Residue Presumptive field test on Lopez, who tested positive for GSR.
